Ashton was founded in 1985 by Robert Levin, a Philadelphia tobacconist who partnered with the Arturo Fuente family to produce his cigars at their factory in the Dominican Republic. That partnership has defined the brand since its founding and gives Ashton direct access to the Fuente family's tobacco reserves and production standards. The Aged Maduro is widely considered the most rewarding blend in the standard Ashton lineup, rated 92 by Cigar Aficionado. The wrapper is a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro that undergoes up to three years of natural fermentation before rolling, an unhurried process that produces a dark, oily leaf without the bitterness that rushes fermentation can introduce. The binder and filler are aged Dominican tobaccos. Despite the depth and darkness of the wrapper the overall profile runs noticeably mild, making it one of the more approachable maduro cigars available at its quality level.
