The Ashton brand was founded in 1985 by Philadelphia tobacconist Robert Levin in partnership with the Arturo Fuente family, who produce all Ashton cigars at their factory in the Dominican Republic. The Cabinet Selection was Ashton's first line extension beyond the Classic, and the distinction between the two lines comes down primarily to time. Where the Classic uses quality Dominican tobaccos, the Cabinet Selection uses Dominican long filler tobaccos aged for five to seven years, and the Connecticut Shade wrapper is aged for an additional year beyond what the Classic receives. Six or more different Dominican leaf varieties go into the filler blend, giving the Cabinet more complexity than the simpler construction of the Classic. The Connecticut Shade wrapper produces the pale, chestnut hued color the Cabinet is known for, a thin and silky leaf grown under cloth tents in the Connecticut River Valley. The overall profile runs mild to medium with a clean, smooth character that has made this one of the benchmark cigars in the accessible premium category for decades.
