Briar Fox

Burley

Briar Fox is the personal blend of the late Peter Heeschen, a well regarded Danish pipe maker whose work is still sought by collectors. Heeschen brought the recipe to Cornell and Diehl, and the blend has remained in their catalog as one of the more quietly enduring entries in the lineup. The construction is straightforward: Virginias and Burley pressed into a crumble cake, no flavoring, no casing, no additional leaf types. The crumble cake size requires breaking apart before packing but comes apart easily, and the compressed form concentrates the natural tobacco character in a way that rewards patience. The blend is known for building gradually across the bowl, starting clean and gaining complexity and spice toward the finish. It is frequently used as a pipe break-in tobacco for this reason, smoking consistently across different bowl shapes and sizes without demanding close attention. Ages well, with longtime enthusiasts noting that a year or more in the tin meaningfully improves the experience. Mild to medium strength.
